Been talking to a guy over phone about what he is advertising as a "Super A" with Woods belly mower for sale, including an aftermarket hydraulic pump (driven off fan belt) which operates an aftermarket three point hitch conversion. When I asked for a serial #, he didn't have one, but gave me a casting code of 5 29 J which I think makes it a '40 model and of course not a "Super". The tractor is 6V electric start, but has no oil dipstick. Does this jive with an early "A"? He also gave me a number of 8638 DF somewhere on the engine, not sure what this is but if it's a serial, it fits with the '40 model year. The tractor was just repainted, and owner says all manuals he has are for a Super A. I'm not sure what to believe, and it's 350 miles away to go see. Pictures look good. My questions are how can I determine if it is in fact a "Super"? If it turns out not to be, how does this affect value? Does $2000 sound high if it is not a Super? Just what are the differences between the "A" and the "Super A"? Did all Super A's have factory hydraulics? I'd appreciate any info some of you folks that live, eat, and breath Farmall Red may offer. I've got an orange WD that I put to work year round, but I'd like to add something smaller to pick up the slack while I tear down "spooky ol' Alice" this summer. I've always been partial to the "cultivision" off-set of the Cub's and Model A's. Thanks, Good Day!

Imagine a crude hole made in the hood to accommodate a new taller air cleaner, the fender wells cut away to make way for larger tires, and half of a sliding glass door used to replace the windshield. Top that off with an old set of '36 Ford headlight shells bolted to the hood. Pretty unlikely for a car... but for a tractor, this is pretty normal. It seems that more often than not they a
