Just replaced a cut out relay with a regulator on one of my tractors. If your system is original 6 volt positive ground, you must have a regulator made for that. I got one that mounts on the top of the generator, just like the cutout. With the cut out, you have two wires that go from the instrument panel to the generator and cutout. (one goes to the ammeter and the other from the generator F terminal to the 4 position switch.) With the regulator, you only need one. That wire goes from the bat terminal on the regulator to the ammeter. You connect the F terminal of the regulator to the F terminal of the generator and the arm or gen terminal to the A (armature) terminal of the generator. The L terminal of the regulator need not be used. You can use the L terminal as a source of power for lights and accessories if you wish, but it is just the same as the bat terminal.
