Great minds think alike Hugh. I thought I was the only one who ever parked on a hillside to pull a PTO to avoid having to drain the oil and refill again. Use to pull PTO frequently on my 460 for tractor pulling to lighten her up a little more on the weekends then put the PTO back to bale hay the next day. Sometimes if a PTO unit hasn't been out for a while or maybe never out of a tractor since it was new, there is probabaly some corrosion from moisture between the PTO and the rear end housing. Dick had better put those short 3/8 bolts back in though until he gets the unit off the tractor.
