Mark , If his leak is actually at the threads, your solution might work. My problem was that the threaded protion of the tank had come loose from the tank and was seeping and it made it look like the sediment bowl threads were leaking. If you look in the tank on an H , you'll see that the threaded portion is a different piece and is welded in place before the tank is put together. The tank sealer worked for me.I did do as you stated and eliminated the sediment bowl.
