Sorry for the rumpled feathers--it's just a pet peeve of a lot of New Yorkers to hear everything north of NYC referred to as "upstate", and the further north in NY you go, the more people dislike it. I guess if you live at the North Pole, everyone is south of you--ditto many New Yorker's feelings about "upstate" versus "downstate". I'm by Watertown, and pretty much everything south of Syracuse gets referred to as "downstate". My brother attended Cornell, and in Ithaca, everything south of Albany was "downstate"! I guess it's a matter of perspective.
