I have a '41 H and had the same problem you had. Well i ended up having to buy a hole new 4th and 5th sliding gear, but i doubt you have to. with mine, the main gear that the fifth gear goes onto and that runs the trans, and belt pully, looked like someone pulled it behind a pickup for twenty miles. The bearing had wore a groove an eigth of an inch down on one side, and was breaking the pilot bearing. So there was nothing supporting that end. There fore, it would come out of fifth. One way to test this out, is to start going down hill in second gear, if the bearing is out, it will make a loud knocking noise from the shaft hanging down and hitting the reverse side gear.
