Tim - "Bad" compression - "low" compression would have been a more accurate term - will result in exhaust smoke, missing on one or more cylinders, excessive crankcase blowby and hard starting. Low compression caused by worn (or broken) rings is evidenced by a noticable quantity of smoke/vapors escaping from the crankcase vent tube when the motor is running. What happens is air leaks by the rings and into the crankcase as the piston rises on the compression stroke. Similarly combustion gases leak into the crankcase during the power stroke. These gases then escape the crankcase through the crankcase vent tube. You will also see blowby escaping thru the oil filler if you remove the filler cap with the motor running. The only fix for a ring problem is to replace them. Best way is to install new pistons/sleeves (or reboring the cylinders and installing new oversized pistons/rings if the motor is not sleeved) Email me off line if you still have questions!!
