Like Hugh said, There could be something too tight in the engine. I would recommend that you pull all the spark plugs out, and then try hand cranking the engine. Generally there will be a very, very slight resistance when hand cranking due to the natural drag of rings against the cylinder wall, but not much at all. Mostly you should just feel the weight of the crank, pistons, etc. moving if its right. If it feels pretty free, Then try the starter to see how engine spins over, it should spin it very fast if all is well.
