How to tell if charging

I have a 350U Gas Wheatland believed to be from about 1958. What I would like to know is how do I tell if my electrical system is charging. Most of the wires seem to be original so they are in pretty rough shape. For a number of reason (frozen gas lines being main one) I couldn't get it to start the other day. I only had enough juice in the battery to give it one or two good tries and then the batt was done. I charged it for 24 hours and I thought the darn thing was going to turn the flywheel right off the tractor it had so much snap. It is still on 6 volts, positive ground. I will likely replace the wiring harness in the summer as none of the lights work (makes digging out of the snow after dark a real special treat) but until I get to warmer weather I would at least like to be able to tell if my battery is getting recharged or if I should throw a trickle charger on it periodically. Since I am typing, I will throw a second question in here. Are there any really good ways to get ALL of the water out of the fuel system? I had to leave the tractor outside (usually it is in the heated barn). I dumped at least a cup of methyl hydrate into the gas tank and ran the engine for 5 minutes but when I went back the next day, even when it would turn over, it wouldn't fire. As soon as it warmed above freezing outside, it fired right up. This happened last year too, so I would love suggestions. Thanks for all the help.
