Generator smells very warm on Super A

Was out mowing the field tonight and smelled something unusal but familiar coming from the tractor. Finally localized it to the generator on the Super A. I had previously removed the battery and reinstalled it and failed to polarize the generator. Would this cause the generator to run hot?
Also when I pulled the generator apart I noticed the bushings were pretty warn and you could see where the armature was dragging on the field. I plan on going to the auto electric shop and get new bushings tomorrow. I ohmed the field and measured about 1.8 ohms which seems to be close to correct. How do you go about checking the armature?
