H tank removal

I removed the gas tank off of my H for painting. Seperating the steering joint was a real PITA. I did loosen the keeper ring at the throttle end, but is there some easy way to seperate that joint without beating the metal to death. I went slow and easy so as not to peen the coupler. Any special tools, technique or something blatently obvious that I am not seeing?
