Hugh, Yes you can "trickle charge" with unit (12 volt low), timer function allows you set charger for a "definite" amount of time, so you don't burn battery.(i.e.,setting 12 volt high set for 2 hrs, won't boil your battery dry.) 12 volt high,as you discovered is for "live boosting or starting a vehicle with a dead battery". Sounds like you picked up a good all around charger starter cheap. Polarity light I'm sure you know is just a "safety" to make sure cables are hooked up right.
