A few weeks back on one of my tractor parts missions I landed home with a battery charger. I have never had one of these before, and as such know little about them or what can be achived with them. To start with I do not have a manual. This unit stands about 18" high, about 12" square, with wheels and a handle to push it with. The dial on timer was missing. I asked my wife if she had any knobs around off old appliances, to which she pulled the oven knob off her range, said get me a new one of these, and you can have this one. It fit perfect. The dial for voltage change had stem sheared off, I was able to get a new one of these at local auto parts store, I will go back as it was not even his brand. The unit has an orange light for polarity check, a red light for charge indicator, an ampmeter. Voltage switch has 5 positions; off, 6 volt lo, 6 volt hi and 12 volt lo, 12 volt med and 12 volt hi or boost. I can turn timer up and it ticks back in appropriate time. The out put cables are only slightly smaller than 1 guage cables on my 6 volt SA. I have an old 6 volt battery, not much good anymore, when I hook it up it draws about 18 amps. Hooked a volt meter to this and on 6 lo it put out 8 volts, 6hi & 12lo 11 volts, 12 med 12 volts and 12 hi or boost 15 volts. Is this unit good? What kinds of functions can I do with it? What are functions of timer? Can I trickle charge with this unit? This and any other pertinant information would be much appreciated.
