Generator on H Farmall

My 1940 H has no generator on it. I have located one on an old M Model. The generator has a black box attached to the top of it. How can I tell if this is a cut out relay or regulator? Will any generator work on my H? This M Model has a 1" round fluted switch under the amp guage in the oval box. I don't know if this has 3 or 4 positions. Did the original switch look like this one? Can these cut out relays be purchased anywhere new? Tryin' to keep it original. Thanks in advance!
