Your H Generator from 1940 should have a adjustable 3rd brush. To see if the one you got from the M is the right one check on the back of it and look for slotted bolt head that tightens a bracket inside the generator that controls a sliding third brush on the armature. It should never be any closer than 3.2 commutator bars to the next brush. On high charge it should show 10 to 13 amps at at engine rated speed and 5 to 7 on low charge..
