Chad - No problem swapping a 12 volt coil for the 6 volt one and dispensing with the resistor. (BTW the resistor is technically a SERIES resistor, not a shunt….). You can simply tape off that extra wire - it's provided to bypass the series resistor when the ign switch is turned to "start", and thus feed full battery voltage coil while cranking. Not certain on the gaps you're looking for. However 0.020 for the points and 0.030 for the plugs will get you going and are probably pretty close to spec.
