Not to ask a dumb question, but is the extra wire that you are referring to, to be taped off, is it the white wire (thereby using the black wire from the wiring harness to connect straight to the coil)? For the previous coil, the end of the white wire is split, with one connection being made at the coil and the other connection made at the resistor. The black wire runs straight from the wiring harness to the other end of the resistor.
Based on your previous response, am I correct in assuming that both wires are at 12V and that while cranking, power is sent through the white wire to the coil (thereby bypassing the resistor and providing 12 volts to the coil)? Then once the engine starts, power is switched and supplied by the black wire (sent through the resistor, providing 6V to the coil)?

I'm just wondering which wire to tape off. Any help is greatly appreciated.
