I'm generally in favor of leaving things at 6 volts because I get a kick out of making the original setup work, and my penurious point of view generally sees less expense involved in making a 6V system work than converting it. In this case, though, my cheapskate approach tells me the line of least resistance might be to fix the 12V system. The cables are cheap and easy to find, and the keyswitch is as well.
