Very technical TA question

I was looking at a diagram explaining the TA. The planetary gear set-up is acutally much simpler than I thought. It's amazing no one else picked up on that device long before that, but then again, leave it to good ol' IH for innovation. I've heard of people saying how expensive they are to repair, but I've also heard from people how cheap the older ones (planetary gear) are to fix, and now I see why. I have now derived two questions. 1.) I don't understand why the tractor freewheels with the TA. I would guess that it could hold back like any other gear (or planetary gear). I do understand the theory(?) that when the TA starts moving too fast it literally explodes, and I can see the outer gear breaking apart in such a situation. Now, with the newer hydraulic TA's, is there still a planetary gear or not? If someone out there a little more knowledgable with TA's and has worked with them, could you explain it to me? Thanks.
