Went out to my local dealer yesterday for a steering worm and gear for my SM, and found a 18 wheeler flatbed being loaded up with all of the salvage tractors. I was going to tear into a couple, so I asked an employee, "Where are these going?" The response was that they were getting 35 bucks a ton for cast iron, melting them down and turning them into armored vehicles for the war. They said the price hasn't been this high since Gulf War I, and they weren't worth that much taking up space. I nearly cried. I have been around these old junkers my entire childhood, and to think that they aren't being restored (several are/were in good enough shape to be restored) makes me sick. I love walking around them, and putting my hand on them almost tells me its story of better days. These tractors (H's, M's, SM's, SMTA's, 400's, 450's, 400D's, 450D's) were kings at one time, doing all of a farms work, and now they will cease to exist. I was shocked, but fortunately, I have been able to get the parts I want before they disapear. Hopefully, they can finally return to the service of their country and stay strong for America once again.
