Farmall M oil check?

I have a 47 M and the valves to check the oil are pretty well shot. They have to be opened with pliers and they leak. Can i just put a pipe plug in and take it out to check the oil? I keep tools on the tractor so it isn't a big deal to remove the plug to check the oil every time i use it. Will the constant removal and reinstallation of a plug wear out the holes in the oil pan? Thanks for the advice.
