To check piston to head clearence get some playdoe from toy store, put just enought on the head chamber of each pistion to lightly cover it( Only do one piston at a time BTW )place the head onto the engine turn the engine over by hand till it hits TDC, remove the head measure the impression, this should tell you about what you have for clearance. Only my two cents worth, someone may have a better way
