There is not supposed to be any oil in the rear axle housing. There is a gasket there but the primary seal on the transmission is a shaft seal on the axle. There are two seals on each axle, inner and outer. The outer is at then end of the axle housing. The inner is where the axle goes through the transmission housing to attach to the bull gear. If you take all this apart, be sure to replace that inner shaft seal. Also, it's important to have the grease fitting at the outer end of the axle housing in place and working because the only lube for the bearing at the outer end is that grease you put in there. If all is right, no oil from the transmission gets out there. This is different than the M and the H which do not have the inner seal.
