You may be right about the head gasket. While you have the head off, it would pay to check the head and deck of the block for flatness with a good straight edge. Pay attention to the place where the old gasket leaked. If the head or block is warped it will need to be ground or planed so that the new head gasket will last. If you want to go to the trouble, you could have the head magnafluxed at a machine shop to detect any cracks.
