H light box

The ammeter housing or light box on my 52 H has an odd shaped hole below the ammeter and above the knob. Was there originally a fuse holder installed there? Can't seem to find a picture of one that looks like mine. Nothing but a hole there now.
And since we're on the subject, what was the purpose of being able to switch between dim and bright lights? Thanks.
