Your plan sounds good, only I'd leave the spark plugs in. Instead simply block the clutch pedal down before you pull - so the motor doesn't spin and so the tranny is not under load. Then pull the tractor both forward and backward several times. Do this with the PTO engaged, and with the gear lever both in a forward gear and in reverse in order to get things inside the tranny as stirred up as possible. Then immediately pull the drain plug and let it sit for a day or two, or until stuff stops dripping from the drain. You'll be amazed what'll come out!!
