As the others said, check your fuel flow. It also has a screen accessed by removing the fuel line nut. Unless you have a distillate/kerosene carb, the C does not have an adjustable main jet. The screw you were turning is the idle mixture. Your carburetor could need cleaning and a new kit. Also your float may be set too low. Specs vary depending on which carb you have, but when upside down it should be parallel to the top (bottom) of the throttle body.
