1951 M Wont start. help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been working on my dads 1951 m for 2 1/2
years now restoring it.all the electrical is new,
wiring battery starter generator starter switch cables coil points condensor. it was returned to 6 volt to try to be as close to original as possible. the problem is when i hit the starter switch it wont even turn over. engine turns freely by hand. the battery when i have a charger on it drops all the way down as soon as i hit the switch. do i have a bad battery or what. i have double and triple checked all the wiring and cleaned all ground surfaces. starter spins if i put direct power to it. i have always hated electrical problems. please help
