1206 TA Adjustment

I have a 1967 1206.I was wondering if someone could tell me (without writing a book) how to adjust the TA.If it is very difficult i will buy myself a service manual.Would i be better off not using the TA?To prolong the life of it?As most of u all know "Hugh" a 1206 is rather large, and heavy.I dont want to split it because of operator error so i call it,lol.Or lack of education.Any comments would be very much appreciated.Thanks
