fuel leaking into motor oil?

I forgot to turn the fuel shutoff off for the winter and when i went to change the oil i found almost 3 gallons of diesel in the motor oil,someone said the transfer pump was leaking but the injector pump has its own independant oil supply and should not have gone into the motor oil. any ideas where to look for a leaking seal? thanks in advance for any info.
