A few years ago I did about the same as you did and went from no brakes to brakes that would skid the tires with extreme pedal pressure.As my 424 gets little use I started riding the brakes lightly during normal use and have found that now I have adequate braking with normal pedal pressure on either side. I have heard that if you soak the pads in gunk engine cleaner that you will have very good brakes for long periods of time but I have not tried this. I have also heard that lubricating the balls and mateing surfaces will will help.BTW your 424 is a very nice machine.
