Don't know much about mags, I like distributors, had one on my '44 H for about 50 years, it was put on when mag went dead in the mid-50's. (It was cheaper to put on a new IH distributer then it was to fix the mag at that time.) Other than points & condenser every so often, its been trouble free. I did have to have it rebuilt a couple of years ago, as the internal bushings finally wore out & it wouldn't stay timed right. I do know that if my H is slightly out of time, it will cause it to heat. Check the timing, it might be your problem, with a distributor, you simply use a timing light-don't have a clue what to do on a mag. Of course, the radiator & block have to be clean, a little rust in either place will cause it to heat when its pulling hard, too. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
