RTV as Valve Cover Gasket

I noticed folks talking about valve cover gaskets in another post and realized you all might have just averted a disaster for me. I am pulling the gas tank out of my 350U Wheatland Gas and it is fighting me every inch of the way. I just cannot get the top of the instrument cluster out of the way enough. It looks like if I pull the valve cover off I will get the last 1/4 inch or so that I need. Question is, once I pull that cover off, do I need to buy paper/fiber gaskets or can I just use RTV Gasket like I do on the valve cover of my truck?
