Terry, You are correct about the plug being used to add gear lube to this gearbox. However, it is only necessary to add oil after installing an empty unit on the transmission housing. This keeps the bearings and gears from running dry when you first run it. The previous posts explain how lubrication is maintained. If you haven't removed the pulley drive you don't need to do anything. I do recommend that you occasionally run the belt pulley. It keeps the shifting mechanism and the shaft splines free from buildup that can make the unit almost impossible to engage. The belt pulley shifter on my '51 H was nearly frozen when I bought it three years ago. It is much easier to shift now.
