Micheal: You have some very good advise here. I can agree on shying away from the 706 with the 282. 282 worked the finest kind in the 560 and 656, however 706 seemed to over load it a bit. The 282 was American built diesel.

The German diesels in the 706, 756, 686, 886, 826, etc were good, but only good, as they had their short comings.

A couple of tractors I like are the 766 and 886 with the 360 cu in American diesel and the 666, which is also an American diesel. Of course as the other guys said nothing in modern history matches the American built diesels in the 806, 856, 1206, 1256 and 1456. In all my farming years every diesel I ever had was American built, and they weren't all IH.

European diesels seemed to last quite well but they had low torque and were miserable starters in cold weather. The first ones IH brought from Britain to Canada, we couldn't get them going from Nov. to April and even in spring and fall we had to use a gas Farmall as a pup start. You still here guys in Canada or in the US northern states grumbling about getting their European diesels going in cold weather.
