06 and 56 series gas/diesel good/bad?

In the 06 series, e.g., 706, 806 or in the 56 series e.g., 656, 756, 856, etc. are there any known bad engines? Is it better to buy gas or diesel? I have a 280 acre farm and want to load, mow, plow, plant, etc. Up to now, all I've owned is gas e.g. '48 M and '50 Super A.
