The only thing that I can think of is either a weak fuel pump or a vapor lock. You might check to see that the fuel line from the pump to the carb is not too close to a heat source. I don't think that the return line would matter. The other thing you might check is the flow from the tank to the pump. If it is not adequate, you would starve for fuel under load.
