Hugh, No direct 140 experience here, but have degreed a fair number of cams in the past. Advancing the cam or loosening the lash will rock the torque curve in favor of the lower RPM ranges - so that tracks. General rule of thumb I remember is 4 to 6 degrees of advance or retard is when you start worrying about piston to valve clearance or the cam ramp. I doubt you've made more than a 1 or 2 degree change by going off .004, so you should be OK as it's low compression with a nice U shaped cam profile. As to why it's off spec, with an OHV engine the first suspect would be worn timing chain or timing gear key, which I'd check before running it any great length of time.
