I have been doing mainly mechanical work on a 140 that had been parked in a heated warehouse for a number of years. After running it a few times during repairs I noticed there was some compression escape through valves. Tractor also didn't have much torque at low rpm. At beginning I found with tractor warmed up valve settings were around .012. I adjusted to .014 as the manual calls for, somewhat better but still the puffing and flutter in exhaust. I checked further into the IT manual which also covers the C-135 engine in the 404. The 404 calls for .014 on intake and .020 on exhaust valves. I proceeded to adjust the exhaust valves to see if I could take the flutter out. At .018 on the exhaust valves she purrs like a kitten. No more puffing or flutter. Am I headed for some valve work? Will it be OK to work tractor that way? Any opinions from some of you engine guys on this.
