Hugh, next time your're at the Case-IH dealership, have them check the valve lash specs in the old IH tune-up book, just to make sure the IT manual is giving you the correct info. If .014" is correct and it has leakage, it's probably time for a valve job (a leak-down test works very well to confirm this). The one thing that I would worry the most about while running with the valves set too loose is wear to the valvetrain. If you don't want to do a valve job right away, try setting the valves as close to the specs as you can without getting any leakage (think of all the engines out there that never get the valves ajusted- they're all running a couple thousanths too loose).
