Chad: I just got done re-timing my 44 A. The timing mark is on the fly wheel. It doesn't matter if you have a starter or not, the starters, I believe, were optional equipment for a time. There is a small cover on the bottom of the housing housing just behind the motor. You will want to take that off. On the fly wheel there is a line mark with (I believe it is DC 14, someone may want to confirm this). There is a notch on the cover as you look through the opening on the cover that is behind the oil pan. You want to make sure those are lined up (and that cylinder #1 os on the compression stroke). That will get you TDC on cylinder # 1. For timing the magneto, you need to turn it all the way towards the engine block, loosenign the two bolts that hold it first of course, (the I&T manual says clockwise as driving, or something like that, but how I described it is how I got it to work), make sure you are on TDC, and turn the distributer untill it clicks. That should do it for you. I am sure there are others here who can explain it better than me, so hopefully they will post as well. Good Luck.
