Likely the distributor neck is simply stuck in the drive housing from years of sitting in one position. Try lightly tapping around the distributor housing (NOT the cap!) with a wood hammer handle. Or grasp the housing with a strap wrench and gently turn. It will likely suddenly pop free then rotate easily. An application of PB Blaster or similar penetrant, then enjoying a beer or two while it soaks in may be helpful too.
