I have a 300 and I ran into the same problem. I finally found a mag to put on it and when I pulled the distributor off I found that only one of the mounting holes was slotted. The other one was not therefore unable to turn for timing adjustment. The only way I could see to change timing was to pull the distributor off and pull the drive lug out and reposition it. I put the mag on and timed it, according to the book, and when I started it up it actually sounded like a farmall. It never did before.
