Gary, When you were cleaning the cables from the battery, to the switch, and from the switch to the starter -- sounds like you may have removed them. If so, there's a third wire there that runs from the starter switch to the ignition box. It should be on the starter switch terminal that runs to the battery. If you've reinstalled it so it's on the terminal of the cable that runs to the starter -- you'll get exactly what you're seeing -- that is, engine stops firing when you disengage the starter. The small wire that eventually feeds the coil should always be on the battery side of the starter switch. Check it, I bet that's the problem. If not, see if a jumper wire from the battery to the coil primary gets it going.
