Could the sizzling sound have come from your ballast resistor? On my M, I have a ballast bypass that allows a full 12 volts during starting but then goes through the resistor when the engine is normally running. If you have a similar setup and your resistor is bad, you would have the engine start but it wouldn't keep running when the starter is dis-engaged because no voltage is going to the coil.
