John, You might consider taking the unit off the tractor to work on it. It is a relatively easy part to disassemble. That way you could get in and clean it up, relpace the bearings (I think IH still has the parts available although I just took mine to the auto parts store and they matched up the numbers)and the seal. Should work like brand new after that. To get it apart you need to remove the control leaver (and you have to have it off the tractor to do this)and everything slides apart after that. In the meantime you should cover the opening to the transmission; I taped newspaper over mine while I worked on it. If you need to run the tractor you have to put a cover plate on it... I have one if you need it.
