Voltage Regulator Problem??

Since I'm not to quick on electrics, I need to ask you guys for some help. When I got my H running, it wouldn't charge at all. I tapped (gently with a large screwdriver) on the voltage regulator and it started charging. Now the charging rate seems to correspond to the speed of the motor - the faster the motor is running, the more it charges. I've only run it for about an hour at a time but it seems like that the rate of charge should drop once the generator has replaced the 'lectricity that was used during the start. Is this an indicator that I'm in the market for one of those fairly expensive 6Volt positive ground regulators? Or do I have something else going on? By the way, this is a 6 volt positive ground system with a generator and regulator - not a cut-out. This tractor apparently had a cut-out on it at one time since it has the 4 position light switch. When I re-wired the tractor, I wired it as shown in Bob M's diagrams for a tractor with a regulator so now I have a light switch with two off positions. MANY THANKS TO BOB M FOR THESE DIAGRAMS - I could have never built my own loom without these!!. Larry
