Mike......go over to the 9N-2N-8N board and look for answers to your alternator questions.....it has been talked to death over there. Your alternator will require your battery to have the negative to ground. As for your one wire alternator, you will have to have a way to "excite" it for a second to make it start charging....there are lots of ways to do it....push button is an example. After you change your battery to make it a negative ground system, you can touch a jumper from your positive bat. terminal to the wire coming out of the alternator for just a second and that should excite the alternator and make it start charging........of course, your engine has to be running........then with your volt meter, you should see that the output from the alternator is more than 12 volts.....13.8 is (I think) what it should be .....remember that...your alternator wire has to lead back to the battery....not to a terminal on the light switch that won't let the juice get back to the battery when its off........I'm sure you understand what I'm saying. hope this helps some.
