Did you change to negative ground with the new setup? You may actually be showing a 20 amp drain. When I converted my SMTA over to 12 volts with an alternator I used the inline resister between switch and coil. It is a chrysler type. Mine lasted about 3 years and then I had to replace it. It is really cheap so don't mind. I would agree that you shouldn't get any charge with the original generator and regulator. Have heard people say a 6 volt generator will put out more voltage if you have a different regulator but haven't tried that
