Try a different thermostat and anti freeze. It definitely sounds like a bad thermostat since it runs cooler without it. Old clean looking anti freeze can quickly make a thermostat stick. I had some once that drove me crazy changing thermostats until my uncle told me to change the antifreeze and that soved it. The amtifreeze was very clear green like new but it was shot. Also CaseIH has raised the temperature of the 66,86 and 88 series thermostats (possibly others)compared to original ones. I believe it was done to lower emissions. The gauges read a lot higher than they used to.
